Irish pubs update as lockdown rules to change on takeaway pints

Takeaway pints are reportedly back on the menu after Ireland's latest move out of lockdown - having been unofficially banned thus far in 2021.

While never officially brought into law, Taoiseach Micheal Martin had said at press conferences in January that takeaway pints should not happen.

However, as Ireland moves one step out of lockdown, this unofficial rule is reportedly set to be scrapped with pubs getting the green light for takeaway pints.

Punters will still have to drink their alcohol a distance away from the premises they bought it in to avoid big crowds congregating.

Many premises nationwide had lawfully been selling takeaway pints despite the unofficial ban.

The major changes which take effect today include the 5km travel limit being scrapped while in-school learning will return in full.

But currently there is no plan to bring back hospitality with no timeline for pubs and restaurants reopening here anytime soon.

The Taoiseach's comments on the reopening being considered in mid-summer are still the most concrete words on the plan so far.

Micheal Martin said in late February: "We don’t foresee that ( reopening pubs etc ) before the middle of the summer ... what the public health authorities are saying is that we stick with this until end of April, then we reflect on the situation and make decisions about the months ahead."
