Irish Pubs: Struggling Temple Bar publicans appeal for help as they face second St. Patrick’s Day with shutters down

Publicans are appealing for help from the Government as they face a second St. Patrick’s Day in lockdown.

March 17 is usually one of the busiest periods for Dublin's famous pubs as travellers come from all over the world to celebrate Paddy's Day.

The Temple Bar Company is a group that represents businesses the area and they are calling for a city centre recovery plan.

More than 2,600 jobs have been lost in the area, which includes hundreds of musicians.

There has also been a €200 million loss in turnover because of the pandemic closure.

And around one million euro per week is lost to the exchequer as a result of a closed Temple Bar.

CEO Martin Harte said there is no sign of tourists returning and city locals will not be coming back in the same numbers.

Mr Harte is asking that a forum is set up as a way to prepare for the reopening of the pubs later this year, once COVID restrictions are eased.

He told RTE: "Money must be ring fenced to be spent in the city centre otherwise Dublin city centre faces ruin, we have all seen what happens when city centres fail, notably Detroit.

"There is no point waiting until June then issuing a press release saying the city is open.

“Solutions need to be in place for when the city opens."

The Temple Bar Company is calling on the Government for financial breaks such as extending the rate rebate scheme into next year.

It also wants them to include businesses losing 30% or more of trade.

The company wants more outdoor events to be funded, more pedestrianised zones, to relax the stay-at-home message to city workers, and the use of decontamination technologies for use in bars, restaurants and theatres.

As a way to mark St. Patrick's Week at home, The Temple Bar Company is running a series of streamed concerts to celebrate March 17.
