Irish pubs: Popular Dublin bar slams no show and cancellation idiots for reason behind strict new booking deposit rule

A popular Dublin pub and restaurant has slammed no show and cancellation idiots for the reason they have had to start taking deposits for their establishment.

The Bank Bar on College Green said the current climate was a struggle and added that these last minute tables failing to show up were breaking them.

In a statement on Twitter, the bar thanked people for their custom and support.

They said: "Really sorry to say we will now be taking deposits with all bookings, the no shows and last minute cancellations are breaking us.

They added: "We definitely still accept walk-ins, the city centre is a struggle but we really appreciate all of your custom and support."

This came the same day that an iconic Dublin city centre pub decided they will not be reopening their doors next week as they slammed a lack of operating guidelines.

Grogans, the hugely popular South William Street watering hole, say they won't be reopening fully until July 27 at the earliest.

Pubs have been demanding clarity on how they should reopen safely as part of Phase 4 of the Covid-19 lockdown exit plan.

Phase 4 is currently set to begin on July 20 - next Monday.

But some scenes in the city centre last weekend as well as anecdotal evidence of pubs and restaurants flouting the "substantial meal" guidelines and time limits; and a recent increase in confirmed Covid-19 cases in Ireland, have thrown those plans into doubt.

The Licenced Vintners Association has said that "the silence is deafening and creating real concern and frustration in the industry" as pub owners, some already on their knees after four months of lockdown, grow increasingly frustrated.

And Grogans shared those sentiments as, in a statement released today, they said they felt "extremely" disheartened at how the proposed reopening has been handled.

"One week from our proposed reopening, the operational guidelines are yet to be released," they said.

"It is extremely disheartening to see how pubs have been treated in this regard.

"As a result, we're sorry to announce we must postpone our reopening until July 27 at the earliest.

"If public health grounds dictate that it is not safe for us to open just yet, we completely understand and accept that, but the very least that should be expected is that we're given fair notice if this is the case."
