Irish pubs: Popular Dublin bar's emotional farewell to 'best barman ever'

A popular north Dublin pub bid a sad farewell to one of their most beloved staff.

Harry Byrnes in Clontarf said it was a "sad, sad day" announcing the departure of barman John Flynn.

An emotional message on the pub's social media page reads: "Ladies and gentlemen, today is a sad sad day. After 24yrs our friend, colleague and resident mad man from Mayo, John Flynn has decided to leave Harry Byrnes and move on to bigger and better things.

"We don't know who's going to miss him more the staff or the customers.

"John always brought the fun and laughter into work (Even after an all Ireland final) and Harry's will definitely not be the same without him. We wish him the very best with his future and a new career.

"And sure you'll never know he might be back next year to celebrate Mayo lifting the Sam Maguire."

The local community turned up in droves on Facebook to say goodbye to the much-loved character.

One punter said: "Best barman that pub ever had. Best of luck, John."

Another person added: "The very best of luck John in your new career and thanks for all the laughs over the years. I will miss you."

Another bar goer said: "Best barman the place ever had in my time there. That's nearly 35 years. Irreplaceable.

"Best of luck John for the future. The job will never be the same again without you there."
