Irish pubs closed: Big changes for Dublin as iconic bar to transform into town hotel

Plans to convert the first floor of the Laurels in Perrystown into a Town House Hotel have been given the go-ahead.

South Dublin City Council has approved the planning permission for the accommodation in the family-owned, traditional pub.

The ground floor level is currently a well-known pub with stairs to a restaurant kitchen area and staff quarters.

The new development comprises of nine en-suite bedrooms, five double bedrooms and 4 four-person family rooms.

A reception area, tea station linen storage, general storage and laundry room will also be included in the build.

There will also be a first floor garden area.

The Laurels has been a family operated Dublin pub in the community for over four decades.

It is currently being run by the third generation of the Hughes family.

The pub’s long history in the locality has left many questioning the new development.

One local said: “Let’s hope it’s as they say, I live beside it and hope it won’t cause any hassle to us all, but I have to say I wish them well.”

Another person was more hopeful for the future.

They said: “Some people will always resist change but they are hardly building a giant Maldron or Travelodge.”
