Pest control experts Rentokil have issued advice on how to tackle flea infestations over the winter period, as a number of counties had a high level of callouts in 2021.
They have urged people to be on the lookout for the signs of an infestation as the insect moves inside to escape the cold weather.
Fleas are wingless and can stick to people or pets. They are commonly found on wildlife such as foxes, rabbits, rodents or deer. Those that come into contact with these animals could be at risk of also carrying the insect.
On the skin, a flea issue could be indicated by a bite or irritation, most commonly found on the ankles and legs. A bite like this will be felt immediately and could last for a week.
Flea bites can also lead to allergic reactions, as well as transmitting tapeworm and, in serious cases, transmit serious diseases.
The insect can be hard to spot as it is barely visible to the naked eye and will hide deep in the fibres of carpets and furniture.
A flea problem can escalate very quickly given the nature of how they breed.
In 2021, Wexford had the highest number of flea callouts in Ireland, with 12% of all calls taking place here.
Dublin followed with 10%, Galway was next with 8%, Cork had 7% and Kildare had 6%.
Richard Faulkner, Advanced Technical Field Consultant with Rentokil, said “The cold weather conditions this winter will likely encourage fleas to come indoors in search of warmth and sustenance.
“It’s incredibly difficult to identify the presence of fleas. If a flea infestation came from a pet, it’s important to treat not only the animal but also the house in order to fully address the problem and prevent re-occurrence.
“Fleas found on the host typically represent just 5% of the total flea population nearby. The other 95% will be in bedding, carpets and furniture.
“Compounding the problem, they can lay dormant and undetected for months or even a year before hatching and attaching to a host. Preventative measures can be taken to minimise the risk of a flea infestation.”
The company’s tips for preventing a flea infestation in your home include washing and checking pets for fleas regularly, washing their bedding weekly at above 50 degrees and vacuuming floors and furniture regularly.
Try to place pet bedding in areas that don’t have carpets and are well sealed. Shake the beds and beat rugs outside instead of inside.
