A company part-owned by U2 frontman Bono has won planning permission for a new “Temple Bar” in Dalkey.
Development firm Clos Nua proposed a revamp of The Tramyard on Castle Street in the heritage village in south county Dublin.
It aimed to build a three-storey building consisting of a bar/restaurant, cafe, health centre, retail kiosks and cultural spaces as well as offices and a public plaza.
The plans for the site of the former tram terminus also included a pavilion on the third floor to seat more than 110 people.
The company claimed the redevelopment of the tramyard would “add to the vibrancy of the town centre in Dalkey and provide the community with many amenities currently lacking from the town”.
An Bord Pleanala yesterday gave the green light for the project.
However, last night it was unclear if the proposal would go ahead as the planning bosses directed that plans for a third-floor pavilion, walkway and garden be omitted from the proposal.
The Dalkey Community Council and several local residents had appealed the decision of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to approve the proposal.
Clos Nua, which is one-third owned by Bono – who lives in nearby Killiney – had also appealed a planning council condition enforcing it to scale back its plans for the pavilion.
The developers claim that they had already reduced the area of the top floor by 55 per cent and vowed to use “a sensitive and high quality design” to address concerns that neighbouring properties would be overshadowed.
Clos Nua bought the 0.8 acre site for a reported €3m in 2018.
It was formerly the location of the Tramyard Cafe and a food, antique and bric-a-brac market.
