Irish pub owner vows to keep vaccine pass rule in place as he sends message to protestors

A Limerick pub owner has vowed to keep the vaccine pass rule in place even after the Government remove its requirement.

Gearóid Whelan, who owns Whelans Bar on Maiden Street in Newcastle West, took to social media on Tuesday to send a message to 'anti vax f**ks' ahead of reopening the pub on October 22.

That's the date where the majority of restrictions will be lifted, including:

  • requirements for physical distancing
  • requirements for mask wearing outdoors and in indoor private settings
  • limits on numbers at indoor and outdoor events and activities
  • certification of vaccination, immunity or testing as a prerequisite for access to, or engagement in, any activities or events

But Gearóid will keep the vaccine pass rule in place later this month.

He explained in a tweet: "We at Whelans Bar will be keeping up the vaccine only going forward, so for all ye anti vax f***s that think ye are getting in on the 22nd of October go and f**k yereselves.

"And i know my language isn't appropriate but its the only language them idiots seem to understand, so for all the normal followers i have just ignore it, the anti vax crowd can" before attaching a middle finger emoji.

Predictably, the post was commented and replied to over a hundred times, with the majority criticising Whelan for his decision.

He followed it up by saying "I'll have to get a second phone to keep up wit all the good luck messages" and adding "Oh i love upsettin the CRAZIES"

Meanwhile, Stephen Donnelly has warned that hospitality restrictions could be reintroduced this winter.

This could see restaurants and pubs shuttered for Christmas again if Covid worsens again.

The Minister for Health was speaking in the Dail on Wednesday afternoon seeking TDs’ approval to extend “the legal framework” to bring back restrictions if Covid doesn’t go away.
