Irish pub customer reveals staggering sum they spent each month on nights out in Dublin

A number of Irish nightlife lovers have revealed the amount of money they generally spend in a month on nights out with one admitting to forking out up to €1,500.

One Reddit user took to the forum to ask if it was normal to spend this much and that he thought most people in Dublin from 25-35 were spending the guts of a grand every four weeks "on the beer."

He admitted the hefty figure included taxis, food at the end of the night, drunken gambling, and some other "vices" in this total.

In his post he said; “Now I'm embarrassed to say it but just before Covid hit (2019/ early 2020) I was probably spending at least €1.5k per month on the beer which made up a significant chunk of my disposable income (it was by far my biggest expense).”

Although over recent months Covid restrictions have cut his costs down, he still admits to spending around €600-800 per month on nights out.

Other Irish pub-goers have been responding to the post with some saying they’d exceed even that, while others slammed the young man for wasting his hard-earned income.

One person agreed with the massive cost of nightlife in Ireland and said; “When I used to live in Cork 10 years ago (I'm not Irish and I've since left the country) I used to live at the start of Washington street.

“From there I observed the nightlife. I think ppl can easily spend 1k a month partying that hard. It's 250 per week. Totally possible.”

Another said; “Have to admit that’s an impressive amount to be spending. That’s more than a lot of people would earn in a month.”

A third broke down their night out spending writing; “It is very easy to spend a lot of money if you have it.

“A typical night out for me might look like this:

  • A €30 taxi to get to town
  • A €30 - €60 euro meal
  • Maybe €30 on beer (big nights will be more)
  • A €30 taxi home

“I only do it once or twice a month and don't drink that heavily (most of my friends are married or have kids), but it can be easy to see how you could reach big numbers if you go out more often and drink more.

“That said, you could also save a lot on this if you don't have the money by using public transport (if it is available), eating cheaper meals (or not eating), or pre-drinking like a student."
