Irish pub asks big question about one rule everyone expected to be gone on Friday

Many in the pub industry are wondering can people drink at the bar again or has that rule change also been delayed from Friday.

Originally, with social distancing set to be scrapped, drinking at the high stool and mixing in pubs was to be allowed.

Speaking earlier in the month, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar had said: "Hospitality venues will be able to return to the capacity they had pre-pandemic.

“People will be able to order a drink at a bar."

However, the government rowed back on those plans on Tuesday and pub rules will be largely the same as they were, just with longer opening hours.

Grogan's bar in Dublin tweeted: "Any word on the bar counter? Asking for an industry."

So what are the rules in pubs? Here's what we know.

Pub rules

Ministers have approved the return of normal trading hours in pubs and restaurants.

There will be a number of light restrictions in place for all including the requirement of Covid-19 certificates proving vaccination or recovery for entry to indoor hospitality.

Social distancing measures will continue to be adhered to while face masks will remain a requirement.

They should only be removed for the consumption of food or alcohol in any hospitality setting.

Table service rules will continue with a limit of 10 adults per table, and a max of 15 including children, while contact tracing data will continue to be collected.
