Irish Prison Service confirm Covid outbreaks at two Dublin jails

The Irish Prison Service has announced it is managing Covid-19 outbreaks at a number of jails across the country, including two in Dublin.

Staff and prisoners have tested positive for the virus at Mountjoy, Midlands and Portlaoise Prisons.

Staff member have also tested positive at Wheatfield Prison although currently no positive cases have been detected in prisoners at the Clondalkin facility.

A total of 22 prisoners have tested positive at Mountjoy, while seven have tested positive in Portlaoise and one case has been detected in Midlands.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Where there is an active outbreak of Covid-19, a restricted regime is implemented until mass testing is complete.

"Wheatfield, Mountjoy, Midlands and Portlaoise Outbreak Control Teams and prison management have implemented additional infection control measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 to the wider prison population.

"The Service is working closely with Public Health, HSE with regard to the management of the current outbreaks including the testing arrangements of staff and prisoners if required.

"At all points, Outbreak Control Teams (OCT) are guided by advice from local Public Health clinicians and meetings with Public Health are convened at regular intervals throughout the course of each outbreak."
