Irish priest flown out to Barbados for funeral of JP McManus' daughter-in-law Emma

An Irish priest has flown out to Barbados to officiate at the funeral Mass of JP McManus’s daughter-in-law, who died suddenly aged 40.

The mother-of-three and daughter of businessman Peter Ledbetter, passed away just before New Year’s Eve at a medical centre after she had complained of feeling unwell.

Emma McManus, a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, had been preparing to celebrate the end of 2020 with loved ones at a private residence on the grounds of the luxury Sandy Lane resort.

While her funeral Mass was set to take place on Friday, it’s now been postponed until early next week, sources close to the family have said.

Fr Chris O’Donnell has flown out to be with the grieving family, said Fr David Casey, priest for the Co Limerick parish Martinstown-Bulgaden and Kilmallock, where the McManus family is based.

He added: “The family are so well thought of. Their presence in the community is strong – they are good to the community. People feel great sympathy for the family. She was a young woman, just 40. Ten years married and three young children.”

Barbados police are awaiting a post mortem to be carried out but a spokesman said they had ruled out foul play and were treating it as a sudden death.
