A Irish pilot has died after his bike crashed into a car in Mexico.

Ambrose Blaine was travelling on a motorbike when a car apparently failed to stop at a junction in Ciudad Constitution, a city in the Mexican state of Baja California.

The crash happened 7.20am on Monday morning.

It is reported that Ambrose, who was originally from Killala, Co Mayo, but had been living in Malahide in north county Dublin. suffered severe head injuries and never regained consciousness despite the best efforts of hospital staff.

The 55-year-old had been working for Turkish Airlines and was biking with three Irish friends towards the United States.

The four bikers began a journey from Southern Argentina to Alaska on the Pan-American Highway back in 2016.

They completed stages of the journey annually and were on the Baja Peninsula at the time of the crash.

John O'Kelly was travelling with Ambrose at the time. He told the Irish Times that he is completely devastated.

He said: "Ambrose was a really great guy. Full of fun and laughter and very well-known in all walks of life, particularly aviation circles.

"We are all just devastated and are thinking of his family."

The other bikers were not injured in the crash.

Mexico police are investigating the crash with the Irish embassy in Mexico city assisting the friends.

Ambrose is survived by his wife, Ann and his daughters, Aoibhin, Niamh, Anna and grandson Cillian.
