Irish people get one back at Sky News' Kay Burley with hilarious internet edit after British comment

Irish people got their own back after an embarrassing geographical blunder by Sky News presenter Kay Burley this week.

One cheeky individual edited the British broadcaster's Wikipedia page to change her nationality to Irish after many people were left fuming following a recent interview.

Burley caused a stir online after referring to those in Dublin as “British” during an interview with Ukrainian refugees on Tuesday.

Allada and Anastasia from Kharkiv joined Burley on air to discuss fleeing their country and travelling to Dublin and spoke about how Ukraine is under attack from Russia.

After getting “stranded” in Poland, Allada said they ended up in Ireland “by accident”.

At the end of the interview, Burley thanked the women for joining the programme, but not before stirring viewers with one confusing line.

She said: “I’m so pleased that you are safe and what a terrible journey you have had but hopefully you can start to build a new life in Dublin safe in the knowledge that the British people are completely behind you.”

In response to this, Allada thanked the Irish people for welcoming them. “We are so grateful to Irish people for all the kindness and all the hospitality that they treat us with and our Irish family who host us,” she said.

Twitter users were quick to comment on Burley’s phrasing, with some stating that "the Brits are at it again".

In response, Burley's Wikipedia page was changed, albeit briefly, to cite her nationality as Irish as part of one person's attempt to jokingly get their own back.

Posting an image of the screenshotted page on Reddit, one user quipped: "The Irish are at it again!"

There were mixed reactions to the internet edit, with some people unimpressed by Wikipedia being changed by "vandals", with others seeing the lighter side of the joke.

One person said: "Stop vandalising Wikipedia."

A second commented: "God Wikipedia edits are just cringe aren’t they?"

A third joked: "I think there is nothing greater in the lives of your typical Irish Redditor than when someone in British media mistakes an Irish person for British. Thank them for it, it's your bread and butter."

A fourth commented: "The backlash has begun. We are claiming Princess Di and Cliff Richard next. That will teach those Brits."

Someone else said: "The sadness in her eyes."

Another joked: "Are we ever not at it?"

While someone else added: "Kay, you can Burley smile - now that you are Irish - you can smile again."
