Irish people consume a shocking 3,000 calories at an average BBQ rollout, expert warns

People consume a shocking 3,000 calories at an average BBQ rollout, experts have warned.

Shops have started stocking up on instant BBQs as the country basks in golden sunshine and rising temperatures.

But recent studies might make you think twice before you reach for that burger.

The average person will consume 3,078 calories at a BBQ, diet expert Terri-Ann Nunns revealed.

Grills and thrills: Dublin set to be foodie heaven this summer

This is well over the daily recommended calorie intake for women (2,000 calories) and men (2,500 calories).

The figures were based on eating:

  • One burger & bun with cheese: 533 calories
  • Two hot dogs with buns: 678 calories
  • Two chicken drumsticks: 422 calories
  • A corn on the cob: 110 calories
  • Two pork ribs: 492 calories
  • Baked potato: 93 calories
  • Two ciders: 550 calories
  • Two gin and tonics: 200 calorie

While these numbers might seem extravagant, experts say that the reality is that it’s easily done at a BBQ celebration.

And this is without taking into considering multiple sides, sauces, and the ice cream for dessert.

Ms Nunns said: “BBQs are a great way to socialise with family and friends, especially if the sun is shining, but they can have a big impact on your diet if you overindulge.

“Of course, everything should be enjoyed in moderation and a treat every now and then is recommended to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“But, by following some really simple steps, you can be sure you stay on track with your weight loss journey and still enjoy a BBQ in the sun.”

Dublin butcher Barry Kerrigan shares top tips on preparing the perfect steak

Here are the top 10 tips to stay on track at BBQs:

1. Ditch the bread including burger and hot dog rolls. Bread is starchy carb which will make you feel full and bloated.

2. Keep an eye on the dressings. Mayonnaise has a shocking 94 calories per tbsp, ranch dressing has 73 and salad cream has 50. Opt for low-cal condiments like BBQ sauce which has just 29 calories per tbsp, ketchup has 19 and sweet chilli sauce has 15.

3. Stick to homemade items as pre-prepared coleslaws, dips, and salads are generally higher in calories and fat.

4. Cut back on the booze as drinking can instantly rack up your calorie intake. If you’re drinking spirits opt for slim line mixers and if you’re drinking wine, try topping up with soda water to make it go that bit further.

5. Limit carb intake for foods like breads, pasta salads, and potatoes as they can leave you feeling bloated and are higher in calories.

6. Ditch crisps and dips for salads and vegetables for sides as they are a lot healthier and low in calories.

7. Try to sit away from the food to avoid mindless snacking.

8. Eat slowly ensuring you chew your food and take breaks between eating.

9. Don’t overload your plate and stick to small portions. You can always go back to seconds if you are still hungry.

10. And most importantly enjoy yourself. One of the most important things about maintaining a healthy lifestyle is allowing yourself a treat every now and then. So don’t be too hard on yourself – simply make the best choices you can and enjoy a BBQ in the sun with family and friends.
