Irish passport rated as one of world's strongest with visa-free travel to 185 countries

The Irish passport has been rated as one of the strongest passports in the world, with visa-free travel to a whopping 185 countries.

It has been ranked joint seventh in a list of most powerful passports, just ahead of both the US and UK, which are tied in the eighth place.

Austria, Portugal, The Netherlands and Switzerland share seventh place with Ireland, according to the Henley Passport Index.

The index measures the strength of a passport based on a citizen's ability to travel visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival in another country.

The ranking is compiled by UK-based citizenship and advisory firm Henley & Partners, using data from the International Air Transport Association.

Japan scooped the top spot for most powerful passport, with Singapore coming second and South Korea and Germany tied in third place.

Those holding a Japanese passport can travel visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival in 191 countries.

At the other end of the scale, Afghanistan comes in last place, with visa-free travel to just 26 countries, while Iraq is second last with visa-free travel to 28 countries.

Christian Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners said: "Asian countries' dominance of the top spots is a clear argument for the benefits of open-door policies and the introduction of mutually beneficial trade agreements."

"Over the past few years, we have seen the world adapt to mobility as a permanent condition of global life."
