Irish news today: Taoiseach's pub update, vaccine boost and temperatures to soar

With things happening so quickly as we approach the weekend, we'd forgive you for not keeping on top of everything that's happened in Ireland today.

However, if you've missed the headlines, never fear.

Here's our recap of three of the biggest stories of Friday.

Micheal Martin shares July 5 reopening latest

Speaking on Virgin Media last night, the Taoiseach said that the potential return of indoor dining and pubs is dependent on the Delta variant's impact on Ireland's case numbers, hospitalisation numbers and the progress of Ireland's vaccine programme.

"We're watching what's happening in the United Kingdom and other European countries in terms of its impact and critically, the metric of the link between the Delta variant and rising case numbers and hospitalisation numbers.

"Does it result in significantly more hospitalisations or not? Then we have the vaccination programme which is rolling out very effectively. For example, this week 317,000 vaccines will be administered. Next week, close to the same are set to be administered. That's a massive protection that will have a positive effect on more people."

He continued: "We understand the need for people to have clarity as early as possible" but said that he can't "speculate right now" about the immediate future of the industry.

"I fully appreciate that it's been a devastating year for anybody in the hospitality sector, travel sector and in tourism because of the pandemic. But as I said, there's a process that's always in place in terms of decision making. I can't speculate right now in relation to it, other than say it is an area of concern to the CMO and everyone."

Mr Martin added: "Anything we open, we want to keep open. We don't want to be going backwards."

Taoiseach gives hope of early jabs for people in their 20s and 30s

Micheál Martin has said younger people may get their jabs quicker due to the growing concerns over the new Delta variant.

Speaking this morning, Mr Martin said that “the balance of risk has changed” as he indicated that this could see a change in the vaccine rollout plan with an acceleration of jabs for younger people.

It was previously estimated by the HSE that this particular cohort would not receive their jabs until at least September.

However, the Taoiseach gave renewed hope of a quicker timeline when he revealed in Brussels this morning (FRI) that discussions are at an advanced stage with the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, and NIAC (National Immunisation Advisory Council) on this.

In terms of the virus, 380 new cases were reported this evening with 38 people in the hospital. Of these patients, 13 are in ICU.

Met Eireann exact day temperatures to soar as a new system moves in

Met Eireann is predicting temperatures will soar in the early days of next week as the country looks set to bathe in warm and dry weather.

From Sunday onwards the national outlook is for conditions to be mixed initially with some showers before it becomes more settled with plenty of "good sunshine".

Monday will see temperatures turn a corner before it ramps up even further from Tuesday with highs in the mid-20s at times, and there will be plenty of dry conditions as a warm-weather system moves in.

In terms of the highest temperatures for the days ahead, Saturday (18 degrees), Sunday (21), Monday (23) and Tuesday (24) are all being forecast.
