Irish news today: Horror on Ireland's roads, weekend of strange weather and 'ideal' pub reopening date

Whether it's the midweek slump, the focus on the football or the desire to get out and enjoy the decent weather during the day, it's understandable if some people missed the biggest headlines of the day.

Thankfully, the Irish Mirror is here to recap the three biggest stories of the day and they are...

Day of horror on Kerry roads

This is the face of the tragic teenager killed in a horror car crash in Co Kerry.

Talented footballer Thomas Healy, who was just 14 years old, was the driver of the vehicle which crashed at the Ross Road in Killarney in the early hours of Wednesday.

This heartbreaking picture of Thomas was given with the approval of his family, who friends say are "absolutely devastated" over his tragic loss.

The youngster and his pal were travelling in a Toyota Corolla when it collided with the tree at around 1.10am.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the tragic youngster was declared dead a short time later.

Thomas’ pal, who is understood to be aged 15, was rushed to University Hospital Kerry (UHK) after having to be cut out of the car.

He remained in a critical condition on Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas is the son of well-known local singer Ger Healy - known as ‘The Singing Jarvey.’

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist who was involved in a collision in Co Kerry on Tuesday night has died, Gardai have confirmed.

The crash involving a motorbike and a car occurred at approximately 8pm at Listry Bridge on the R563 between Killarney and Milltown.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was removed from the scene by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry where he was later pronounced dead.

The scene remains closed as it is being preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and traffic diversions will remain in place.

A period of mixed weather ahead

With this week's weather pattern being defined by sunshine, decent temperatures and showers, the conditions have been very mixed.

Well, that's set to continue into the weekend but Met Eireann has given hope that we can see a return to some higher temperatures this week.

After a miserable start to the week which saw the country drenched in heavy rain showers, it looks as though temperatures are set to climb to as high as 21C.

That doesn't mean an end to the rain however with Ulster set to see some patchy drizzle throughout the week.

It will also be largely cloudy across the country throughout the weekend.

But it looks as though it will be Munster and Connacht that are set to see the worst weather toward the end of the week with some thunder and hail expected.

Varadkar shares 'ideal' reopening date for indoor dining

The Tànaiste has shared an "ideal" reopening date but refused to make any promises ahead of the big indoor dining decision next week.

He told RTE's News at One: "We would intend to bring proposals to government and to Cabinet next week, next Tuesday. I can't say for certain that we will be able to implement them on the 19th of July, that would be ideal, but I can't say that for certain.

"But like I say, we are working on a number of options at the moment and we would hope to bring proposals to Cabinet next week."

Regarding the possible use of testing to allow the return of indoor dining, Mr Varadkar added: "It's under consideration but I should be frank and say there are difficulties with it, we wouldn't have the capacity to carry out 10s of thousands of 100s of thousands PCR tests for people to go to a restaurant or a pub, we just don't have that capacity in the system.

"And antigen tests are obviously a little more controversial, and certainly no test would be as good as having a vaccine, and that's why we are encouraging people to get their vaccine as soon as they are offered it and to get their second dose."

Cabinet will meet on Tuesday, July 13, to discuss the latest proposals after a number of meetings with industry leaders.
