Irish news today: Delta variant warning, Garda checkpoints and McGregor's black eye

With the sun splitting the stones on the longest day of the year, we'd forgive you for not keeping on top of everything that's happened in Ireland today.

Temperatures hit 20C in some parts of the country as bars and restaurants served customers outdoors - though there was a slight change in the rules surrounding that.

Here's our recap of three of the biggest stories on the summer solstice.

Chief Medical Officer 'concerned' about Delta spike

Dr Tony Holohan has sounded the alarm after a rise in the Delta variant in Ireland.

Though overall case numbers seem to have stabilised and the number of people in hospital continues to drop, there is major concern from health officials about the variant that originated in India.

The variant has caused chaos across Europe, particularly in the UK, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of further lockdowns as a result.

Dr Holohan took to social media after today's numbers were released with the grim statistics.

Officials at these checkpoints are tasked with the "detection and prevention of suspected fraud and abuse of the social welfare system".

The Department said that these checks have taken place for "a number of years", but now include inspecting eligibility for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP).

They added that the main group targeted in these operations are people in the transport sector, such as those on their way to work in "commercial vehicles, haulage and taxis".
