Irish news today: Covid rules changing, Met Eireann forecast freeze and shop bypass alcohol law

Cabinet are meeting today to discuss changes around Ireland's close contact and isolation rules with recommendations from Dr Tony Holohan.

That's expected to be the big news on this chilly Wednesday with many of you sitting at home in isolation, if estimates that 500,000 people have been infected in the last week are correct.

Here are the main headlines you need to about today;

Covid rules likely to change today

Cabinet will meet to discuss the current trajectory of Covid-19 in Ireland, as well as any potential easing of existing measures.

One of the core subjects up for debate will be the relaxation of close contact rules for those who have received the booster vaccine.

This comes after Stephen Donnelly confirmed he had received recommendations from Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, and planned to present them to Cabinet.

Officials will now consider whether or not to allow close contacts, who are fully boosted and have no symptoms, to avoid having to restrict their movements.

For other close contacts who do not have the booster vaccine, they will still have to restrict their movements for seven days and all positive cases will need to isolate for the same period.

Met Eireann's freezing forecast

Met Eireann has predicted below freezing temperatures to hit two regions today as frosty conditions move in.

Despite the sunny skies in Munster and Leinster, there will be plenty of frost forming overnight with lows of -2 degrees celsius.

However, general daytime forecasts for today show it will be dry with good spells of sunshine.

It will become cloudier later in the afternoon in parts of the north and west with the odd spot of drizzle developing.

The highest temperatures will range from 6 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly or variable breezes.

Fog and low clouds will persist in the south and southeast through much of the day on Thursday with a few brighter spells developing elsewhere.

Shop cheekily bypass alcohol law

A Cork shop has unveiled a cheeky new deal that bypasses Ireland's new Minimum Unit Pricing law on alcohol.

The new law has been in place for over a week now with public opinion largely against the idea.

And Sam's Gala in Dunmanway has put signs up around their shop of the offer which states: "Buy 24 Plastic Glasses for €30 and receive a €47.34 credit note absolutely free. See instore for terms and conditions."

The credit note of €47.34 happens to be the price of big slabs of Budweiser and other beers - which would previously have cost considerably less.

A social media post by the shop has been shared by thousands with praise being heaped on the shop for the tongue in cheek offer.
