Irish news breaking now - Met Eireann's sizzling forecast, Delta surge warning and vaccine portal opens

The weekend is almost upon us and Ireland is to be graced by stunning weather for the next few days.

However, young people are being warned to avoid crowded settings as Covid cases surge right across the country.

Here's all the news you need to know about today;

Met Eireann's stunning forecast

Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees over the weekend as sunny spells are expected nationwide.

Met Eireann has said that the places hit with the hottest temperatures will be in the southern half of the country and mainly inland.

Aoife Kealy, a meteorologist from Met Eireann told the Irish Mirror: “The main thing is that everywhere is going to be really warm over the weekend.

“It is a pretty common picture, I suppose that the warmest temperatures will generally stay over the Southern half of the country but mainly inland.”

However, it will stay cooler along the coast: “Just along the coast, there will be a bit of a sea breeze so it will be a little cooler along coasts.

“But overall most places will reach the mid-20s if not the high 20s.”

Delta warning

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said young people and the unvaccinated are now the most vulnerable in society.

He has asked unvaccinated people to not travel abroad, continue to wear masks outdoors and avoid socialising indoors.

He revealed: “We've had 200 people in ICU, in the past two months - 199 of them are not fully vaccinated.

“We're seeing a major surge in cases almost entirely among younger people and people who are not fully vaccinated.

“We as a government and we as a parliament have responsibility now to protect those who are not fully vaccinated.

“And over the course of the next few weeks, people who are not fully vaccinated are at greater risk than ever before.”

Vaccine registration opens to next group

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that the HSE’s COVID vaccine portal will open to the 25-29 age cohort today.

In an announcement, Minister Donnelly said, "Calling all 25–29-year-olds. You can register for an mRNA vaccine from Friday".

Those who register through the portal will receive a Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine.

To register for the vaccine, people will need their PPS number, Eircode, a mobile phone number and an email address.

If you do not have all four of these or would prefer not to register online, you can call HSELive on 1850 241 850.

People aged 18-34 can also register for a one-shot Janssen vaccine with a pharmacy. However, this is subject to supply.
