Irish newlyweds splashing out far more on honeymoons than regular holiday

Newlyweds are splashing out far more on their honeymoons than on a regular holiday, new research has revealed.

Couples are spending a whopping 67% more than on their usual getaways - a massive €5,985 compared to the usual €3,580.

Emirates Holidays revealed the hottest honeymoon trends on Thursday that also showed that a third would consider bringing their family along too.

The study said that 35% of people would be happy bringing their kids, grandparents and extended family with them on a ‘familymoon’.

Going somewhere new (41%) and good weather (40%) were high on the list of priorities for honeymoon planning and unsurprisingly, more than two thirds (68%) of couples said they wished they had used a travel agent to take the tension out of honeymoon planning.

And with Thailand proving the most popular spot for the romantic post-wedding bliss, Emirates are teamed up with the Thai Tourism Authority to help couples.

Nasreen Yousaf, Honeymoon Planner at Emirates, said: “A honeymoon is the perfect time to indulge, which is why it’s no surprise that we tend to splash out spending more than double what we’d spend on a holiday.

“Thailand is a fantastic destination for couples looking to treat themselves with some incredible hotels on offer.”

Jordan Rowntree, another planner, added: “The trend of honeymoon-hopping is perhaps why we are seeing an increasing number of couples choosing Thailand as a honeymoon destination.

“With vast cultural diversity, incredible wildlife and stunning landscapes, it’s also a really easy country to travel around.

“For instance, honeymooners who want to hop can travel in style with Anantara Bangkok Riverside’s 3-night cruise, which enables couples to explore multiple points from the comfort of a luxurious river boat.

“As honeymoon planners, our job is to make it an altogether easier and more enjoyable experience for couples, guiding them through the whole journey and ensuring they don’t miss out on those extra-special touches that make their trips unforgettable.

“Thailand offers the perfect honeymoon experience which is why I particularly love planning a couple’s first married holiday there.”
