Irish Netflix users to be hit with price hike this month

Many Irish Netflix users will be hit with a price hike this month as the streaming giant updates its rates.

The premium rate - currently set at €11.99 - will go up by €1 to €12.99 on February 28, according to an email sent to customers.

The company said: "We're updating our prices to bring you more great entertainment. Your monthly price will be increase by €1 to €12.99 on 28 February 2021.

"This update will allow us to deliver even more value for your membership - with stories that lift you up or simply make your day a bit better."

Those on a premium account will see their price rise from €15.99 to €17.99.

People using the standard account at a cost of €7.99 a month won't see any change.

The streaming service's subscriber numbers have jumped during the pandemic, with close to 16 million new customers added globally in the first three months of 2020 alone.

Netflix is available in more than 190 countries, and has almost 200 million subscribers.

During the pandemic, many gorged on some of its biggest shows – including The Last Dance, a documentary on the exploits of US basketball legend Michael Jordan.
