Irish mum opens up on her 'crazy decision' to move to one of the most dangerous countries in the world

An Irish mum has opened up on her "crazy decision" to quit her job and move to one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Ruth King has no regrets after leaving home for the poverty-striken Central American country of Honduras.

Kildare native Ruth revealed she and her husband David left their jobs in Ireland in 2010 and headed first to the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman.

From there the couple moved to the island of Roatan in the Honduras, a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world.

Ruth told the Irish Sun: "In hindsight it was a crazy decision. We had no contacts, we had no prospects. We just went out on a limb.

"We had absolute blind faith it would work out. Looking back, it was insanity, we left two good jobs in a tough time in Ireland in late 2010.

"But we just trusted in the universe that we would find something and we did. We love it here. Our three kids were born here — it's home."

The family now looks to support underprivileged communities in the country, and Ruth has written a children's book, titled Gilly the Grateful Superhero, with all proceedings going to help their charity efforts.

She explained: "Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the world and are in desperate need of the most basic of necessities.

"Since moving to Honduras in 2012 Ruth and David have dedicated themselves to helping and contributing to the communities of Honduras with donations, building schools, building family homes and providing supplies of any kind to families in the most urgent of need.

"Proceeds from this book will go directly towards funding these projects so they can continue their great work for years to come.

"This book will not only spread an amazing message to all who read it but it will also directly impact the children and families of Honduras."
