Irish mobile customers to see huge price hikes early next year as expert offers cost-saving tips

Irish mobile customers are set to see huge price hikes in the new year as most major networks plan to drive up charges.

From April next year, Three mobile customers will see an increase of 4.5% and then every April after that, the same increase will be applied.

The increase means those paying €35 a month will see their bill rise to €36.58 next April and will continue to increase each year.

Vodafone has also implemented price hikes earlier this year, and the increases don't stop there.

"So it's not just your mobile plan, it's also mobile broadband," Newstalk's technology correspondent Jess Kelly told the station.

"So I do think it's time for people to sit up, pay attention. Look at what you're paying, look at the service that you're getting and then maybe shop around."

Ms Kelly said she would advise people to look at digital networks as an alternative.

She said: "The ones that I would look at would be the digital mobile networks, so things like GoMo, Clear Mobile, 48, they're all associated with the big networks, but the key difference is they're considerably cheaper.

"So, for example, you could sign up to Clear Mobile now for €12.99 a month. You could get calls, texts, and data. Now the data is capped at a slightly slower speed, but for the majority of people, if you're not using your mobile phone to download massive files, if it's not a work phone, for example, €12.99 versus €40 plus a 4% increase over the coming years could absolutely be worth the while. So, I would look at the digital networks."

Ms Kelly said people are still paying high phone bills despite cheaper options being available.

She said: "At the moment… people are still paying €60 or €70 a month on their phone bill when you could sign up to something like GoMo for €14 quid a month, get no caps on anything and save a huge amount of money."

Ms Kelly warned customers to check the terms and conditions of their mobile contracts as if you break the contract, you may be fined.
