Irish MMA fighter shares touching duet with grandad who has dementia singing John Lennon's 'Imagine'

An Irish MMA fighter shared this touching duet with his grandfather, who suffers with dementia, of John lennon's iconic song 'Imagine'.

Ian Garry, from Portmarnock, Dublin, got a new tattoo of the word 'Imagine', dedicated to his granddad, as the word acts as a trigger for him to begin singing the infamous tune.

Ian Garry, 21, said in the video: "I've pulled up outside my granddad's house and it's the first time I've seen him since I've got my tattoos done.

"The one I got for him is 'Imagine'. He's got dementia so he can't really remember a lot of things lately and obviously it's getting worse.

"But for some reason whenever you say the word imagine he immediately goes to John Lennon and starts singing - I love it."

The Dublin native then walks in to his granddad and, once Ian shows off his tattoo, the pair begin to perform their duet.

The Mixed Martial Arts welterweight who fights with Team KF martial arts in Swords said he got the tattoo as a connection to his granddad who is in his 70s.

The pro fighter who is signed to Cage Warriors told the Irish Mirror: "The tattoo is the word imagine and I got it because of the connection to him and the song.

"Obviously his dementia affects his memory but when he hears the word imagine he starts to sing and it just makes me smile every time.

"His dementia hasn't created any barriers as such but just made life a little more difficult and require more patience."

He continued: "We have a family group chat to try and make sure my granddad is brought on activities every week.

"He loves bowling and football so we all try our best."

"Singing with my granddad is magical. We get along very well, we have the same personality and always love a good sing song and a dance."

The video has been viewed half a million times on Ian's Twitter account and has gathered huge reaction from users.

One user said: "I cried watching this, fair play. Lots of emotions going on right now. Glad you can make these memories with your granddad right now."

Another added: "Amazing. Thank you for sharing! I take care of my gramma with dementia as we speak. Me and her have several one word things she never forgets even when she doesn't know who I am or what she just ate."

While another said: "Ian this is absolutely beautiful mate and I wish your family all the best fella. Lots of love."
