Irish Mirror readers unanimously put Roy Keane ahead of Steven Gerrard in midfield pecking order

Ireland may be fairly evenly split between Liverpool and Manchester United fans but there was no contest in a vote on two of the clubs' greatest leaders.

An Irish Mirror poll found that 62% of readers think United legend Roy Keane was a better player than Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who got 38% of the vote.

Both were the heartbeat of their team in central midfield. Keane helped United win 17 major trophies during his time at Old Trafford, while Gerrard won nine major trophies during his time with the Merseysiders.

Gerrard talked recently about modelling many parts of his game on the Corkman who he included in his World XI.

"He was someone I was a big fan of as I was growing up and I really studied his game.

"Then I had a lot of battles against him and he was a top player. I don't think you appreciated how good you were until you were up against him. He was fit and strong, a box-to-box midfielder and he had to go in."

Keane has said of Gerrard: “He was a good player. He was a really good player. I don’t throw around these lines that everyone was a great player or a legend. That’s all nonsense.

"He was a really good player and I think he would have done well at United. He won Liverpool a lot of big games. Good player Gerrard. You can’t take that away from him.”
