Irish Mirror readers pay tribute to coronavirus victims after heartbreaking front page

Irish Mirror readers have called for the victims behind the statistics of the Covid-19 pandemic not to be forgotten.

Many people were touched by seeing the faces of some of those who have died on yesterday’s heartbreaking front page.

Reading about those behind the grim nightly death toll moved readers to pay their own tributes on our social media channels.

Some families also added memories of their own loved ones who have died.

Sarah Coyle wrote: “My 84-year-old father in law lost his battle to this horrible virus yesterday morning after a 12 day fight for his life.

“His name is Chris and I’m so honored to have known him and have his beautiful grandchildren. Sleep tight Grandad x”

Susan Grundy left a poignant three-word tribute under the story online which simply stated: “For my mam. XX.”

Brenda Rainey Monahan called for an online page to remember all the victims.

“So very sad . May all these lovely great people rest in peace,” she said. “Thoughts and prayers with all their families xx

“Think it would be lovely to have a remembrance page so families can share their loved ones’ photos and stories if they like. Give them all the respect and the condolences the deserve xx.”

Sharon Hogan was moved by the stories of families not being able to attend funerals.

“All these poor people rip, and I hope all your families can celebrate your life the way they are deserved as soon as possible” she said. “It makes me so sad that these people can’t have a proper send off.”

Joan Doyle added: “Nice to see someone pay a tribute to the people of this country”

Pauline Dowd called for those that have died not to be forgotten after the crisis.

Angela Daly posted: “May they rest in peace. Lovely tribute.”

“A beautiful tribute to each of them. Well done #notjustastatistic,” said reader Monica Houlihan.

Ann Marie Farrelly commented: “So sad, but a touching tribute. May they all rest in peace.”

The virus that has take such a toll was described as “vicious” by Theresa Chambers who added: “All these wonderful people and more have lost their lives to such a vicious virus. May they Rest In Peace.

Ann St Ledger described our tribute as “heartbreaking to read” and prayed or the safety of frontline workers.

They were also in the thoughts of Anicka McCann and Aaron Mullane who described the Mirror story as “a shocking read.”

Mary Gaynor Reid spotted the image of friend Fran Byrne in the pictures of those who have passed. “RIP Fran will be sadly missed,” she added.

While Deirdre Egan simply posted: “Just devastating. Rest in peace.”
