Irish MEP Mick Wallace calls Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido a 'gobshite' in European Parliament

Irish MEP Mick Wallace was reprimanded at an EU sitting yesterday for calling Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido a 'gobshite'.

The representative was speaking in Brussels about an election in the South American country, which saw reigning president Nicolas Maduro re-elected.

The United States and more than 50 other countries, however, recognise Juan Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader until a further election can be held.

Dressed in neon green yesterday, Mr Wallace said: "Do you not agree that the recognition of Guaido is an absolute embarrassment to anyone that has to occupy this chamber?

'It is a disgrace on the part of the member states of Europe that so many of them have recognised an unelected gobshite."

The Ireland South MEP, a part of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left in the EU, is then reprimanded by the speaker at the parliament for using the word 'gobshite'.

He is told by the parliament's vice-president Rainer Wieland: "Now you did use the word 'gobshite' sir, and so I am going to have to reprimand you over that."

MEP Wallace doubled down on Twitter today, saying that the recognition of Guaido as president is "outrageous" and repeating that he is an "unelected gobshite".
