Irish man goes viral with romantic drone delivered engagement atop Atlantic coast cliffs in West Cork

This is the moment an engagement ring is delivered by drone to an unsuspecting girlfriend atop a West Cork cliffside in a dramatic and romantic wedding proposal last week.

Castletownbere man Blue Cassidy proposed to his Brazilian girlfriend Maria Gilvanda in the unique stunt which was planned last year but postponed due to the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, CorkBeo.ie reports.

The lovely moment took place at a cliff top on the Atlantic coast near Allihies, Cork and has been viewed thousands of times online.

Local photographer and drone expert Niall Duffy was the man behind the machine and flew the drone to the couple - but not without difficulty.

The plans were almost thrown into chaos at the last minute when the drone came close to being downed by high winds.

Niall told CorkBeo it was difficult to know who was more nervous, him or the man about to make the proposal.

He said: "Blue had asked me to do this, he had a very specific proposal in mind, last year,

"But he had to postpone it because of the lockdown. So he waited six months. He wanted it to be a total surprise for his girlfriend.

"So we told her that they were taking part in a tourism promotion video for the Beara (Peninsula) - they were going to have a picnic on a clifftop and that's why they had champagne and a blanket."

Niall said the conditions were less than ideal for a drone carrying an engagement ring when they finally reached the cliff top and everything was ready to go.

"I was right on the edge with it, to be honest - I didn't think it would work and I said maybe we could call it off until we got better weather.

"But, he had already waited six months so we went ahead with it,

"The drone got there, the ring arrived, she said 'Yes', and everybody's happy."
