Irish Love Island star Greg O'Shea reveals why he has retired from rugby

Irish rugby star and telly favourite Greg O’Shea has taken a step back from sport as he shares his retirement decision with his fans.

Limerick native Greg represented Ireland in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics playing with the Rugby Sevens.

The former rugby union player and Olympian took to Instagram to say that “it has been a really difficult decision for me to decide to retire from the game I love.”

He shared with his 997,000 followers that “It just feels like the right time for me to close that chapter of my life, especially after reaching my goal of becoming an Olympian and with everything else I want to do outside of rugby.”

Greg has been playing rugby since his school days along with competing in sprinting.

He made it onto the Munster rugby team and went on to play for the Irish national sevens team.

Greg shot to fame after taking home the cash and crown on the fifth season of Love Island alongside Amber Gill.

Since then, Greg has taken a number of broadcasting spots from telly presenting with Virgin Media, standing in to join Doireann Garrihy on the 2FM breakfast show and returning to 2FM to host his own ‘celebrity takeover’ show.

He even went on to pass his exams and is now a qualified lawyer.

The decision for Greg to retire from rugby may come as a shock to fans after Greg previously said he was stepping back from broadcasting to focus on his sports career.

But with Greg’s huge success co-hosting Virgin Media’s rugby-based show The Line-out alongside Muireann O’Connell, perhaps the star has decided to backtrack onto the entertainment route he appeared to be heading down.

Friends and fans have wished Greg luck and success for the future with fitness stars Rob Lipsett and Marvin Brooks and Dublin athlete Hannah Tyrrell all chiming in with well wishes.
