Irish League teenager heading to United States on soccer scholarship

Irish League footballer Paddy Burns has earned a move to the United States.

The Glenavon defender secured a full scholarship with The University of Notre Dame.

The 18-year-old - a brother of Hearts defender Bobby Burns - is hoping to travel Stateside in August, depending on Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The Northern Ireland youth international voiced his delight at the move, where he will play football with Notre Dame Men's Soccer.

Burns told Notre Dame: "Notre Dame is the perfect combination of a really great academic school and a very strong soccer program.

"Additionally, as a proud Irish Catholic, the mission of Notre Dame appeals greatly to my own personal values – it really is the perfect fit for me!"

Speaking on his Facebook page, Burns added: "I’m delighted to be going to the University of Notre Dame in August (all being well) on a full scholarship.

"I’m gutted that I can’t continue playing for Glenavon after this season to try and pursue many of my ambitions there and I want to thank everyone at the club for everything - I’ve had some wonderful moments as a fan, then a reserve player and then a first team player.

"I’ll be watching every game from across the Atlantic.

"A new chapter for me but the aim very much remains the same.

"Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here, particularly: my family, friends, coaches, teammates and the terrific staff at St. Malachy’s."

Burns helped St Malachy's College win the Under 18 Schools’ Cup last year.

In total he won five Belfast Cups and two Northern Ireland Cups during his time at the school.

He also captained Northern Ireland Under 18s to the Centenary Shield.

The versatile teenager spent the second half of last season on loan with Knockbreda from Glenavon.
