Irish League season set to end after clubs fail to reach agreement

The Irish League season is finally set to end after clubs failed to reach agreement during eleventh hour talks.

Negotiations were held over the weekend and again at 9am this morning in a bid to find a resolution on how to end the 2019/20 campaign, including the potential distribution of European prize money.

No breakthrough was reached, and now a final recommendation will be made by the NI Football League Board.

It is understood a mathematical formula will be used to determine the final league positions, which was one of the original proposals tabled by NIFL.

It is also believed there will be relegation from the top-flight, which could see Institute drop into the Championship and be replaced by Portadown.

Linfield currently sit top of the Premiership by four points over Coleraine, putting them in position to claim two of the European spots.

It is also hoped to complete the Irish Cup before August 3, with the winners earning one of the other Europa League berths.

If semi-finalists Coleraine were to win the Irish Cup, then Crusaders - who sit third in the Premiership - would earn a place in Europe.

Clubs have been immersed in crunch talks over the past 72 hours in a bid to find agreement on how to end the season.

The distribution of European prize money has also proved a major obstacle during negotiations.

The majority of clubs had already rejected NIFL's official two options on how to end the league - play two more rounds of fixtures OR use a mathematical model to determine final standings.

Last Thursday Crusaders forwarded a proposal that would see the league ended now with the current positions being declared as the final standings, and a pyramid scale being used to distribute European money.

The NI Football League Board will meet at 6pm this evening to confirm its recommendation on how to finally end the season.
