Mathematical model set to decide final Danske Bank Premiership standings

A mathematical formula is set to decide the final standings in this season's Danske Bank Premiership.

It follows another hectic day of talks involving clubs and the NI Football League.

This morning clubs tried to thrash out an eleventh hour deal on how to conclude the 2019/20 campaign and the potential sharing of European prize money.

No agreement was reached, throwing the ball over to the NI Football League's Board which met this evening.

That body met at 6pm, and it was approaching 10pm when NIFL confirmed there would be no statement issued until Tuesday morning, forcing fans to wait longer for official confirmation.

It is believed a mathematical model will be used to determine the final standings. The formula will be decided by an independent panel.

Linfield currently sit four points clear of Coleraine at the top of the Premiership, putting both clubs in position to qualify for the Champions League and Europa League respectively.

It is also expected there will be relegation from the top flight, with Institute currently bottom of the table.

Championship leaders Portadown would earn promotion back to the Premiership.

Again, a mathematical model will be used to determine the final league positions in both the Champonship and Premier Intermediate League.

It is believed the Irish Cup will still proceed, with two semi-finals and a final to be played before August 3, with the winners earning the third European spot.

It is hoped NIFL's statement on Tuesday morning will offer more clarity.

Any resolution will bring the curtain down on a season that has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
