Irish League managers voice concerns over Covid-hit season

Irish League managers Stephen Baxter and Niall Currie have voiced their concerns over the 2020/21 Covid-hit season.

Four of Crusaders' players tested positive for coronavirus this week, forcing the postponement of Friday night's game against Carrick Rangers.

Both clubs will now be out of action until January 2 at the earliest, with all sport in Northern Ireland set to shut down for one week starting on December 26.

Elite sport will be allowed to resume from January 2, which currently only includes teams in the Premiership.

The first round of the Irish Cup is due to kick-off on January 9, but those games are in doubt as 20 of the 32 teams are all deemed to be non-elite.

It means all leagues outside of the top flight face an uphill battle to get their seasons started, let alone finished.

Crusaders boss Stephen Baxter (Inpho)

"I do worry for the Championship clubs, trying to start their season in the middle of February, especially with the Euros coming in June," Baxter told Radio Ulster.

"And even our own season, it will be difficult to get 38 games fitted in. We have a big programme in January coming up so it is really important we don't lose games.

"If we lose two sets of fixtures this month on Boxing Day and December 29, then we have a lot of games ahead of us.

"It will be interesting to see if we can fit 38 games in before the end date in May."

Carrick boss Niall Currie also fears for the Championship season if the division fails to earn elite status.

The second tier of the NI Football League has yet to start its 2020/21 campaign.

It is scheduled to kick-off on January 2, but a further delay is expected under the latest Covid restrictions.

Speaking on Radio Ulster, Carrick manager Currie said: "I have worries for the Irish Cup and for Championship and PIL clubs. I worry because I don't know where this is going to end.

"It is a situation where I don't know if there will be a ball kicked in the Championship this season.

"I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel at this moment, especially with the new regulations set to kick in over the next four to six weeks.

"I worry, because all of a sudden you will be into February time and I don't know if you can start a season in February."
