Irish League joins in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as matches are postponed

Friday's fixtures in the Danske Bank Premiership have been postponed following the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

The death of Elizabeth II, 96, who was the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, was announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

Many sporting events scheduled for Friday have been postponed, including two games in the Danske Bank Premiership.

Cliftonville were due to host Glentoran at Solitude, while Larne vs Dungannon Swifts was scheduled for Inver Park.

The NI Football League confirmed the postponements following consultation with all four clubs.

In a statement, NIFL said: "As a mark of respect in light of the passing Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II today, the NI Football League have taken the decision to postpone the two Danske Bank Premiership scheduled for Friday evening.

"In consultation with the four clubs, all parties have agreed to postpone both Cliftonville v Glentoran and Larne v Dungannon Swifts.

"The NIFL will consult with relevant stakeholders regarding the fixtures across all NIFL divisions scheduled for Saturday (10 September) and provide a further clarification on these matches tomorrow (Friday) morning."

A number of Irish League clubs joined in paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

Linfield Football Club said: "Linfield Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the death this afternoon of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. We wish to pass on our sincere condolences to her family and to her loyal servants across the Nation and the Commonwealth. God Bless."

Glentoran added: "Glentoran joins the nation in mourning the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Club should like to extend its condolences to all members of the Royal Family at this sad time."

Confirming the postponement of their game against Glentoran, Cliftonville added: "All at the Club extend our sincere sympathies to those affected by the loss of Queen Elizabeth II."

Ballymena United said: "The directors, staff and players of Ballymena United pass on our condolences to the Royal Family following the sad passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II."

Crusaders said on Twitter: "Crusaders Football Club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II. The Royal Family will be in the thoughts and prayers of our members, supporters, volunteers, players, coaches and staff at this very sad time."

Glenavon FC said: "Glenavon are saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. Our deepest condolences are with the Royal Family during this time of mourning."

Larne said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time."

Portadown said: "Everyone at Portadown Football is extremely saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen & join the nation in mourning her death. Our sympathies, thoughts & prayers are with the Royal Family at this sad time."

Carrick Rangers tweeted: "All at Carrick Rangers are very saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family at this difficult time."

Coleraine said: "Coleraine Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this sad time."

Dungannon Swifts said: "All at Dungannon Swifts FC are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Royal Family. We extend our heartfelt condolences to them at this difficult time."
