Irish League fans urged to have their say on all-island proposals

Irish League fans are being urged to have their say on plans to reshape football here.

Kerry businessman Kieran Lucid's proposals for an All-Island football competition will be discussed at a special stakeholders' meeting in Belfast next week.

Coaches, players and supporters have been invited to the event at the Waterfront Hall on Tuesday night, January 28.

Opinion remains divided on the idea of a cross-border format, where clubs from the Irish League and League of Ireland would compete against each other.

A number of options are being considered, including a 'split season' where clubs would play home and away in their current leagues, and then merge for the latter half of the season.

This template would guarantee European places before any split takes place.

Lucid hopes supporters can get a clearer picture of the proposals at next week's Belfast summit.

"We would encourage all fans to attend and give their views, and have a stake in discussions," he said.

"This is not us saying 'this is the way it is going to be'. We have to hold our hand up and admit there is little appetite among northern fans to replace the Irish League, but it maybe opens it up to some formal competition.

"So it would be great to have as many fans come along next Tuesday night and have their say. It is very important that fans are involved.

"There is the Danish football model example, where they couldn't agree on a format, and it was actually the fans who came up with the format.

"The fans are the punters who are going to be coming through the turnstiles. So their opinions are very important."

Lucid added: "Unless you listen to the fans, it is a non-starter to begin with. So it is really important that they give their views and shape the proposals, rather than just criticising it.

"We invite all fans, whatever their views, to engage with the project and shape it."
