Irish League fans hoping to raise awareness with charity match

A group of Irish League fans have kicked-off plans to host a special football match to help raise awareness of mental health.

The wheels are already in motion to hold the charity game later this year.

The idea came from the which was launched before Christmas.

Glentoran supporters Dylan Gray (19), Ryan Batchelor (33) and Darren Miller (25) are the lads behind the initiative.

Their Twitter page (@IrishMental) aims to "offer help and support to all Irish League fans, players and coaches".

And now they want to promote the importance of mental health even further by hosting a charity match this year.

"Being an Irish League Mental Health Awareness page, it only made sense to us that the best way to raise money was by doing what we all love - playing and watching football," explained Dylan.

"It means that we can get people out exercising, showing them that it can boost their mental health and hopefully it can show people that sport can be a path to go down to feel better.

"We want to make it fun and interactive. Not only for us but for our followers, the people that support our ideas that are giving us the ability to carry this event out.

"When our page first started the charity football event was our first feeler to see if there was any interest. The response has been great and when we raised the idea again it has gained a lot more support."

The guys hope to hold the match at the end of the domestic season.

They initially aimed for March time, but they now have pans to make the event "far bigger".

Dylan said: "Plans are underway. Obviously with setting up just before Christmas it was chaotic. But we’re hitting the ground running.

"There aren't any definite details with regards to venues or dates but we’re hoping for June time.

"We originally thought March but we’re making this event far bigger than originally planned - which is a teaser for our followers!

"So the preparation levels have increased."

And Dylan says the event will be open to everyone.

"Ideally we’re looking to get fans, players, former players and coaches to play in the event," he added.

"We definitely want fans to be heavily involved. With the new plans we have started with, we would love the support of the fans. We want to give something back to them for the continued support and motivation they give us."

On the day is is planned to auction off a number of football memorabilia items to raise money for charity.

"Some players and coaches have been really great with coming forward and offering items," Dylan said.

"We also hope to hold a collection after the game for those that play and the people that come and watched. So everyone get saving now as there will be some great items up for grabs!"

Dylan added: "We want to raise awareness immediately within fans and players about the importance of our mental health.

"Long term the money will benefit charities within Northern Ireland. We are hoping to hold a few fundraising nights between now and June. Details of them will follow once agreed.

"If anyone has any questions or would like to donate vouchers/items for the raffles/auction then get in touch on Twitter @irishmental

"Same with any players or coaches who might read this. Any signed items that we can get will raise more and more funds for a great cause."
