Irish League club "devastated" following death of former youth player

Irish League club Ards have paid tribute following the death of Brandon Thompson.

The youngster came through the ranks of the Championship side and "was much loved by his teammates and coaches".

"We are devastated to learn of the death of former Ards youth team player Brandon Thompson," read a post on the club's social media pages.

"Brandon played for both our U16s and U18s as well as our Academy 2003s.

"He was much loved by his teammates and coaches. Our thoughts are with his family at this dreadful time."

Brandon's current club, Derriaghy CC, also paid tribute to the youngster, reports Belfast Live.

They said in a statement: "What a difficult post to write.

"Everyone at Derriaghy CCFC are devastated to learn of the passing of our friend and player Brandon Thompson.

"Brandon joined the Club one year ago, representing both the first and second teams in that time.

"He became an instant hit with his teammates and our supporters with his larger than life character and fantastic energy both on and off the pitch.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Brandon’s family and friends at this difficult and sad time. Rest in peace Brandon."
