Irish jockey Rob James gets one year ban - eight months suspended - for dead horse video

Irish jockey Rob James has been given a one year ban from riding after an investigation into a video of him climbing onto the back of a dead horse.

The shocking video, which was filmed in 2016, showed him smiling on top of the dead horse in front of several other people.

It circulated on social media just days after an image of trainer Gordon Elliott astride a dead horse caused widespread outrage.

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board ruled yesterday [Wed] that James "acted in a manner that was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of horseracing."

The last eight months of James' ban will be suspended, and the jockey has said he will not attend a race meeting or point to point during his riding ban.

James apologised last week for his “wholly inappropriate and disrespectful” actions, and said he was “heartbroken by the damage” caused by the video.

The jockey rode the Elliott-trained Milan Native to victory at last year's Cheltenham Festival, in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Riders' Handicap Chase.

It follows Elliott being banned from training for 12 months, with six of those suspended, at the conclusion of his case with the IHRB last Friday.
