Irish households may be costing themselves big money by washing machine mistake and two-hour period to avoid

As the cost of living continues to rise, Irish households are being warned they may be washing their clothes wrong.

The clothes wash is one of the most frequent ways households use energy and with prices through the roof, it's also one of the easiest ways to save money.

The time, setting and how full your machine is has a huge impact on how much it actually costs you at the end of the month.

Advice from Bonkers.ie says: "Up to 80% of the energy that your washing machine or dishwasher uses is for heating the water, not for running the machine. (This is why Eco washes often take much longer than standard washes - they're heating the water up more slowly to save you money.)

"So go for the 30 degree wash for your clothes where possible as well as the 50 degree wash for your dishes. Your pocket will thank you and the end result will be practically the same.

"Also, only use your machine when you have a full load. While some newer machines are intelligent enough to know when you have a half load, most aren't. "

And try avoid washing at peak times, Electric Ireland say that 5pm to 7pm is considered a peak and could cost you three times more than using appliances between midnight and 8am.
