Irish hero Aidan Walsh suffers 'slight ankle sprain' celebrating Olympics win

Irish Olympic hero Aidan Walsh has suffered an ankle injury while celebrating Friday's welterweight quarter-final success.

Belfast man Walsh leapt in celebration after victory over Merven Clair of Mauritius as he secured at least a bronze medal and has suffered 'a slight sprain'.

The 24-year-old is due back in the ring on Sunday for his semi-final against GB's Pat McCormack but this evening in Tokyo, the injury has been downplayed by his camp.

A spokesperson said: "He had a slight sprain after his fight today but is looking forward to fighting on Sunday."

Walsh was ecstatic after securing an Olympic medal earlier and gave an emotional interview afterwards as he joined the pantheon of Belfast and Irish boxing greats.

“I’m getting shivers here just thinking about it," the 24-year-old smiled.

“It’s incredible, it’s amazing, it’s something that I dreamed of since I was no age.

“The same as Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Hugh Russell...I was talking to Hugh Russell before I came out here and it’s amazing now that I’m in the same situation that he was in.

"Obviously I want to go further. It’s really, really good.

"It’s incredible. I’m just so glad I’ve done my family, my girlfriend, my coaches and. Team Ireland so proud.

"To have your name up there as an Olympic medallist… I want to go for gold, always aiming for higher and better.

"It’s gone now and I’m on to the next one – I’m looking forward to the next one. "

Kurt Walker will fight for a medal on Super Sunday - while Kellie Harrington will get her chance to do the same in her quarter-final on Tuesday.

It could be one of the most memorable days in Irish Olympic history with Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy in medal contention in the golf which concludes that day.

Rhys McClenaghan is also a medal hopeful on the pommel horse in the gymnastics on Sunday.
