Irish golfer makes two holes-in-one in the same round

An Irish golfer made two holes-in-one in the same round to blow probability out the window.

Dalkey man James Archbold was playing in a society outing at Powerscourt Golf Club last Saturday when he aced two par threes on the spin.

The odds of making a single hole-in-one are huge but the chances of two in 18 holes are a staggering 67,000,000/1.

What started out as an average round with two friends got very exciting on the sixth hole.

James, 66, told the Irish Mirror: "I hit a pitching wedge and it caught the hill at the back of the green and started rolling back.

"Then it was getting closer and closer until we saw it fall into the hole. We were all laughing about it."

James only gets out on the golf course about eight times a year, plays off a modest 16 handicap and in his words "bangs a few balls on the driving range now and again."

But on the 11th hole - the next par three on the course - he did something even the likes of Tiger Woods have never achieved.

James told: "I hit a nine iron and it landed about a foot away from the pin and then it just disappeared.

"We weren't sure though whether it went it as we couldn't see properly.

"So we started shouting at the lads who were playing in front of us, including my brother Martin, asking if it went into the hole.

"When they shouted back that it did, I fell down on my knees and screamed. I thought it could never happen - these things don't happen to me.

"You would want to see the three of us jumping around the place. It was crazy."

To put the feat in some context, golfing great Seve Ballesteros never had a hole-in-one throughout his long competitive career.

And in the history of the PGA Tour only three players have ever had two in the same round.

This wasn't James' first ace either. The semi-retired bricklayer managed one on the same course on the 11th hole too five years ago

He beamed: "I have got two holes-in-one on the same hole!"

The celebrations carried on at The Druid's Chair in Killiney where he was the talk of the pub.

He added: "It was a great night. Everyone was going on about the two holes-in-one.

"It will never happen again."
