Irish golfer invited into cockpit after pilots think he's Open champion Shane Lowry

Irish golfer Paul Dunne was invited into a plane's cockpit by two pilots who thought he was Open champion Shane Lowry.

The 26-year-old told of the hilarious mix-up on Twitter - a week after his compatriot Lowry triumphed at Royal Portrush.

Dunne explained: "The flight attendant just brought me into the cockpit to meet the two pilots who wanted to congratulate me on winning the Open.

"After correcting them they said they’d been googling it and we look exactly alike? #OnlyInAmerica #Iwish."

Dunne, who was tied for the lead as an amateur after three rounds of the 2015 Championship, is a high-class player and won the British Masters in 2017.

But it is hard to see the physical similarities between him and heavily-bearded Offaly man Lowry.

Former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn joked to Dunne: "Your beard grows quick!"

Lowry's fame sky-rocketed after winning the Open by six shots in front of adoring crowds on the Antrim coast.

The 32-year-old pocketed €1.7 million in prize money and is set for huge endorsement deals on the back of the victory.

But on the evidence of his fellow professional's anecdote it appears his face is not instantly recognisable to everyone - just yet.
