Irish golf club building an island green like Sawgrass' famous 17th hole

An Irish golf club is taking inspiration from TPC Sawgrass by building a island green like the famous 17th hole.

The 13th hole at the Palmerstown House Estate's Course in Kildare is getting a dramatic revamp.

Previously framed by an array of bunkers, the diggers have moved to begin work on an island green that is sure to strike fear into the amateur golfer.

The design will resemble that of the 17th hole at Sawgrass in Florida which is one of the most iconic sights in all of professional golf - and has found out some of the game's best ever players on more than one occasion.

Previously the Palmerstown hole measured some 182 yards off the back tees, which if unchanged would be a frightening carry over water for even top-class golfers.

Incidentally the Players Championship, played at TPC Sawgrass, will host the world's best early next month, with Rory McIlroy defending the title he won in 2019 after last year's tournament was cancelled due to Covid-19.
