Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher handed shock Liverpool start in Champions League

Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been handed a shock Champions League start tonight for Liverpool.

The Cork shot-stopper has been picked for tonight's clash with Ajax in Anfield after number one Alisson Becker was ruled out.

The Brazilian has been left out as a precaution after suffering a tight leg muscle ahead of the game.

And Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has handed the Irish youngster a massive opportunity, opting for him in between the sticks over usual second choice Adrian.

Kelleher has been third choice at Anfield for the past two seasons, but has only seen game time in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup as Klopp rotated his squad.

He also picked up a Champions League medal in 2019 after being named as third goalkeeper in Liverpool's matchday 23 in their 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

After team news broke this evening, Liverpool fans wished the 22-year-old well in his Champions League debut.

"What a night for Caoimhin Kelleher," one fan said.

Another added: "Your game of a lifetime to stamp your mark and become a permanent no.2 for Alisson. We’re all behind you."
