Irish football in mourning as former assistant to Jack Charlton Maurice Setters passes away

Irish football is in mourning today after passing of former assistant boss Maurice Setters.

The Englishman, who was assistant manager to legendary Ireland boss Jack Charlton, has died at the age of 83.

Setters and Charlton were at the helm for nine years during an incredibly successful period for the Boys in Green in the late 1980's and 1990's, with Setters also having served as Ireland under-21 manager.

The FAI tweeted: "The Football Association of Ireland are saddened to hear of the death of Maurice Setters.

"Assistant Manager to Jack Charlton and a former Ireland Under-21 Manager, Maurice played a key role in the success of the Irish team in the 1980s and 1990s. May he Rest in Peace."

One fan said: "Rest in peace. Maurice was part of some great days".

Another added: "Two legends gone within months."

An English football legend, Setters played for clubs such as West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, Coventry City, Charlton Athletic and Manchester United in a stellar career.

Manchester United said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maurice Setters. Maurice played 194 times for United in the 1960s, winning the FA Cup in 1963 and captaining the team on a number of occasions."
