Irish Football Association fraud investigation sees two charged

A man and woman have been charged with a number of offences following a police probe into alleged fraud at the Irish Football Association .

It was claimed back in August that around £200,000 had disappeared from the sports organisation’s coffers.

The “financial discrepancies” were reported to police and an investigation launched.

A man, understood to be a member of staff at the time, was subsequently arrested and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Tonight the BBC revealed that a 39-year-old man is now facing court action over alleged crimes including fraud by abuse of position.

A 36-year-old woman has also been accused of possessing criminal property following the PSNI investigation.

Both are understood to be due before Belfast Magistrates Court on December 20.

The Irish FA, which is the governing body for association football in Northern Ireland, was founded in Belfast in 1880 and proudly claims the title of fourth oldest home association in the world.

It represents 960 registered clubs and a pool of approximately 25,000 players across counties Antrim , Armagh , Down , Fermanagh , Derry and Tyrone .

An IFA spokesman said they would not be commenting on the alleged fraud as “it is a live case”, adding: “We will let it run it’s course.”
