Irish food producers left fuming after Donald Trump announces 25% tariff on products

Irish food producers were fuming after Donald Trump battered Irish butter, bacon and whiskey in his trade war with the EU.

The US President is slapping a crippling 25% tariff on a range of European products over what he claims are illegal subsidies from EU countries to Airbus.

The move, which comes into force on October 18, will hit iconic brands such as Kerrygold butter, Bailey’s Irish Cream and pork products including bacon.

Mr Trump got the go-ahead from the World Trade Organisation to hit €6.8billion of goods in what he called a “big win for the United States”.

But the decision was greeted with dismay here. Drinks Ireland director Patricia Callan said: “We are disappointed and gravely concerned that cream liqueur and single malts will be subject to tariffs in their largest market, the United States.

“We are particularly disappointed that, yet again, spirits categories have been dragged into a trade dispute about unrelated sectors, in this case, aircraft.”
