Irish festival attempts to break Guinness World Record with 'world's biggest disco ball'

A festival is aiming to break a Guinness World Record by creating the "biggest disco ball in the world" this June at Punchestown in Kildare.

The Biggest 90’s-00’s Disco Festival which takes place on June 25 at Punchestown will attempt to break a world record by building the biggest disco ball in the world.

Irish company Spectrum Productions has been tasked by the event organisers to build the disco ball that will measure greater than 10.33 metres, which is the current world record size that was lifted into the air and rotated at the Bestival Festival in 2014.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Jack Quirke from Spectrum Productions said that they are "very excited" to work on the massive disco ball, which is being built in a warehouse in Dublin.

He said: "We've very excited, the disco ball will measure about 11 metres which is quite the size. This has never been done before, the disco ball will have an internal bladder that will be inflated then we'll add 1500 tiles to it.

"It'll be quite the spectacle, and we've to get a specialised crane to lift it up because the rules for the Guinness World Record says the disco ball has to be lifted up into the air, rotated, and on display at an event."

According to Jack, it will take 30 men to lift the gigantic disco ball as well as a crane or cherry picker.

He explained: "We began planning it a month ago, and it'll take one more month so it should be ready by 15 June."

Spectrum Productions also specialises in audio, lighting, and stage FX as well as fireworks displays.

Jack said: "We're also hoping to do the first drone lighting display at Punchestown as well."

The Biggest 90's-00's Disco Festival will see 15,000 disco fans set to dance across three stages in Kildare this summer.

This event marks the Biggest Disco’s first festival since 2019 and will feature some of the biggest acts of the 1990’s and 00’s including Maxi Jazz (Faithless), Basshunter, Vengaboys, Gala, Paul Oakenfold and many more, guaranteeing ticket holders over ten hours of nostalgic fun.

A spokesperson for the festival said “We have asked the team at Spectrum to build a giant disco ball to break the record – it will be nearly one tonne in weight and have over 1500 mirror tiles on it. It’s going to look spectacular when its hoisted into the air on the evening of 25 June”.

Fans can expect an immersive experience featuring flash mobs, confetti, fire, CO2 jets, drone shows, fireworks, and many more surprises as over 40 acts from the 90’s and 00’s take to the stage.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite (€71.51) and with a bus schedule from all over the country to bring revellers straight to the gates it promises to be a great day and night in the summer festival diary.
